ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s issues guidance on how to support people rough sleeping this winter

WithÌýtemperaturesÌýfallingÌýacross many parts of the UK, leading homelessness charity StÌýMungo’sÌýhasÌýissuedÌýadvice onÌýhow people can best support those rough sleepingÌýthis winter.Ìý

ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s reports that winter traditionally sees the highest proportion of people they support requiring emergencyÌýassistance. Last winter,Ìýnearly halfÌý(43 per cent) of the people ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s Outreach teams assessed had physical health needs including respiratory illnesses, hypothermia, and frostbiteÌý

The numbersÌýof people faced with the harsh reality of homelessnessÌýcontinuesÌýto rise, withÌý5,000ÌýpeopleÌýrecorded as sleeping rough in England on a single night lastÌýyear.ÌýÌý

In order toÌýsupport those who are rough sleeping during winter, you can:Ìý

  • Call 999 in cases ofÌýmedical emergency, or when somebody is in immediate dangerÌý

  • ContactÌýStreetlink:ÌýThis service connectsÌýpeople rough sleeping with local supportÌýand outreach services.ÌýWhenÌýsubmittingÌýa referral,Ìýincluding as muchÌýdetail as possibleÌýwillÌýmake it easier for our teams to find and support that person.ÌýÌý

  • Find outÌýaboutÌýyourÌýlocal services:Ìý NearbyÌýdayÌýcentres,Ìýmeal centres,Ìýhealth services,ÌýwarmÌýspacesÌýandÌýcommunity spaces, and sharing theirÌýdetails withÌýsomeone experiencing homelessness can help themÌýto accessÌýimmediate support. You can alsoÌýadviseÌýpeople who are rough sleeping to contact their local council for support, if they have not done so already.Ìý

  • Offer a hot drink:ÌýA hot drink can help warm people up inÌýcold weather.ÌýChecking a person’s preferences isÌýa simple wayÌýto show respect and ensuresÌýthat your offer is as useful as possible.Ìý

  • Start a conversation:ÌýHomelessness canÌýhave a negative impact on someone’s mental health and can be aÌýveryÌýisolating experience.ÌýAsking somebody how their day is going may seem like a small gesture, but itÌýcanÌýhelp to counter thisÌýisolation. You could also ask if somebody would like you to make aÌýStreetLinkÌýreferral on their behalf, or if there is anything specific thatÌýsomebodyÌýwould likeÌýhelp accessing.Ìý

  • DonateÌýorÌýVolunteer:ÌýThere areÌýmany ways you can volunteer for ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s,ÌýfromÌýsupporting the work of their Outreach teams,ÌýtoÌýoffering your unique skillsÌýto helpÌýwith everything fromÌýart workshops toÌýtranslation.ÌýDonating a one-off amount,Ìýor setting upÌýa more regular donation,Ìýalso helps to support ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s work rebuilding lives and ending homelessness.Ìý

Jill Thursby, Director of Pan and Central London and StreetÌýHomeless Services at ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’sÌýsays:Ìý“People forcedÌýto sleep roughÌýon the streetsÌýface many dangersÌýeveryÌýsingle night,ÌýwithÌýtheÌýthreat of violenceÌýandÌýillnessÌýaround every corner.ÌýAdd to thatÌýfreezing and wetÌýconditions, and the risksÌýbecome even greater.ÌýIt can even be fatal.Ìý

“With homelessness levels continuing to rise,Ìýit’sÌýeasy to feel powerless. But the guidanceÌýwe’veÌýshared here shows how you can make a real difference— helping people who are rough sleeping to feelÌýsupported andÌýenabling us to reachÌýas many people as possible.Ìý

“As ever, our frontline teamsÌýremainÌýon the streets every day and night of the year, finding and supporting people who are rough sleeping, and helping them access emergency accommodation and ongoing support.â€Ìý

The number of people rough sleeping has increased by 164% since 2010, with a lack of affordable housing, rising rents, and cuts to services all fuelling a deepening crisis. People can support ÃÛÌÒÊÓƵ’s in a number of ways, including donating and volunteering. Our wider website contains more information on how to do this.Ìý
