New data released today (31ÌýJuly 2023) by theÌýÌýshows the total number of people sleeping rough inÌýLondon between April and June 2023 wasÌý3,272.
ThisÌýrepresentsÌýaÌý9%Ìýincrease comparedÌýwithÌýtheÌý2,998Ìýpeople recordedÌýasÌýsleeping rough in the same period the previous year.Ìý
TheÌýlatestÌýCHAINÌýdata revealed,Ìýof those people sleepingÌýrough, that:Ìý

1,614ÌýwereÌýdoing so for the first time,Ìý12%Ìýhigher than the same period last yearÌý

411ÌýpeopleÌýwere considered to beÌýliving on the streets.Ìý

1,285Ìýpeople were seen intermittently sleeping rough, which isÌý8%Ìýhigher than the same period last year.Ìý

“It is desperately sadÌýthat the number of people sleeping rough inÌýLondonÌýcontinuesÌýto rise.ÌýTheÌýongoingÌýfailure to address the severe housingÌýshortageÌýandÌýaffordability crisisÌýis clear.Ìý
“As rentsÌýspiral,Ìýmore and moreÌýLondon residentsÌýareÌýfalling into homelessness.ÌýWe knowÌýthat less than 2% of rental properties in the capital are affordableÌýforÌýpeople receivingÌýHousing Benefit.ÌýOnce again, we are callingÌýon the GovernmentÌýtoÌýurgently increase HousingÌýBenefitÌýsoÌýthatÌýitÌýproperly reflectsÌýthe cost ofÌýrenting. Without immediate intervention,ÌýhomelessnessÌýin London willÌýsimplyÌýworsen.Ìý
