ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s longest-serving volunteer Jennifer Burnham awarded British Empire Medal in New Years Honours

³§³ÙÌý²Ñ³Ü²Ô²µ´Ç’sÌýlongest-serving volunteer,ÌýJennifer Burnham,Ìýhas been awardedÌýaÌýBritishÌýEmpire MedalÌýin the New Year’s Honours list.ÌýTheÌýawardÌýrecognisesÌýherÌýcontribution to supporting people experiencing homelessness in accessing the creative arts.Ìý

Burnham,Ìý82,Ìýcontinues to volunteer for ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s and has made an enormous difference to hundreds of people’s lives over the course of almost 30 years of volunteering.Ìý

She startedÌývolunteeringÌýfor theÌýhomelessness charityÌýin 1998,Ìýwhen she beganÌýleading an artÌýand creative writingÌýgroupÌýin Kings Cross.ÌýÌý

TheÌýfirstÌýgroups took placeÌýatÌýaÌýÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™sÌýcare home for menÌýwithÌýsignificant histories of sleeping rough and using mental health services.Ìý

TheÌýartÌýgroupsÌýhave been credited withÌýcompletelyÌýtransformingÌýthe service,ÌýandÌýBurnhamÌýcreated aÌýbrand newÌýspace forÌýresidents toÌýlearn new skills,ÌýexploreÌýcreativity,Ìýand develop new ways of expressionÌýtogether.Ìý

Alongside art groups, Burnham has also coordinatedÌýa number ofÌýother creative projects, including a programme of monthly visits toÌýmuseums,ÌýgalleriesÌýand other places of cultural interest.

She also played a pivotal role in empowering people supported by ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµâ€™s to take part in creative initiativesÌýsuch asÌýtheÌýmonth-longÌýdrawingÌýfestivalÌýTheÌýBig Draw.Ìý

BurnhamÌýhasÌýalsoÌýhelped to coordinateÌýclient-led projects such as the Without Walls exhibition of art by people affected by homelessness, which took placeÌýat The Guardian News and Media Gallery in August 2012.ÌýÌý

Together with members of her art groups, Burnham alsoÌýcreatedÌýaÌýnew, independentÌýspaceÌýfor those with lived experience of homelessnessÌýtoÌýshowcaseÌýtheirÌýcreativeÌýworkÌý–ÌýtheÌýlong-runningÌýmagazine Homeless Diamonds.ÌýÌý

Since 2006, the publication has offered a platform forÌýartisticÌýtalent,Ìýand a voice for those with lived experience of homelessness.

Published three times a year, the publicationÌýshowcasesÌýwriting and artÌýby people associated with ÃÛÌÒÊÓÆµ’sÌý–ÌýwithÌýeveryÌýperson whoÌýsubmitsÌýworkÌýhaving at least one piece featured.Ìý
